I was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, as the first of three children to Donna and Terry Shoreman. My brother, Mark, and sister, Danielle, soon followed me; who remain two of my best friends to this day.
Our family of five moved to Leawood, Kansas when I was 10-years-old. There I attended Cure of Ars Middle School, Saint Thomas Aquinas High School, and found my first love...DANCE! Each day I would rush home from school, eat dinner as fast as I could, and then head to the dance studio for 4 plus hours of perfecting my arabesque and attitude.
I continued to dance as a part of the University Dance Company and Prairie Wind (a local professional dance company) while attending The University of Kansas. During college, I rediscovered my second love, MEDICINE. See me pictured below during my kindergarten graduation, hoping to someday grow up to be a "doctor."
Holding onto my Fisher Price Doctor Kit, I started medical school at THE Ohio State in the summer of 2003; my family had moved to Cincinnati, Ohio the summer prior. Upon graduation, this Hoser declared herself a Hoosier and started residency in Internal Medicine/Pediatrics at Indiana University where I would meet my true love, Charlie. Having completed a fellowship in Heart Failure at IU, I am now getting ready to start my first "real" job...WISH ME LUCK!
Charlie was born in Wichita, Kansas as the first of two children to Lorrie and Randy Janssens. His brother, Corey, came just a year later. Charlie lived in Derby, a small suburban town south of Wichita, with his mother during his earliest years. He was a happy "little guy” who spent most of his time outdoors playing in the woods near his home, and tried any sport he could get involved in. Love of the outdoors and sports are still an important part of Charlie’s life today.
Charlie lived in Wichita with his father, and “second mother” Arline, from the time he was about to leave grade school behind. He soon discovered that he could excel in academics, which was highlighted by his membership in the International Baccalaureate Program during his tenure at Wichita East High School. If you ask Charlie, however, what was the most important learning experience for him during high school, he’ll tell you that the “A-Show” was finding his talent for wrestling. He also loved playing pick-up basketball in his spare time, which is his favorite sport to this day.
Charlie took a hiatus after high school, spending two years working for Johnson's Garden Center in Wichita. Lucky me, Charlie found his passion for landscaping as he continued enjoying his love for the outdoors. The picture below offers a glimpse of the landscaping he designed and personally “worked” in the backyard of his home.
Charlie attended Wichita State University (Go Shockers!), where his father also attended college, and then left Kansas to attend medical school at Midwestern University near Phoenix, Arizona. Away from the steak and potatoes of Kansas, Charlie found a taste for wine and fine dining. Lucky me once again – he also learned that he loves to cook! One of Charlie's favorite hobbies is trying new recipes.
Charlie left Arizona to complete his Internal Medicine residency at Indiana University. He is now two years out of training and is a practicing Hospitalist/Nocturnist. Charlie is the "real deal" doctor, and yes, he does enjoy golf in his spare time. It is not an overstatement to say that Charlie is just great with people and that he loves life.
How We Met
The first time that I remember seeing Charlie was November 2007, I had completed four months of pediatric training and was starting my very first internal medicine rotation at the Veteran's Hospital. I was so nervous to be taking care of "big people" for the first time, since I had become accustom to caring for "kiddos" over the previous four months. It was my first night of overnight call at the VA and Charlie walked into the room to changeover his list of patients to me. My fears soon subsided as Charlie put me immediately at ease and even made me laugh a time or two.
The feeling that I have around Charlie is one of the many reasons why I am marrying him. Charlie does not even have to say a word to make me feel at home. We continued to be friends for the next two and a half years until our first date on May 18, 2010; Charlie's birthday of all days! We are now getting married exactly three years later. As you can see, May 18th is a very special day for Charlie and me. We also share this first date anniversary with my parents and my brother and his wife. We believe May 18, 2013 was destined to be our wedding day...don't you agree?
